Barnesville Native Continues to Grow Champion Cabbage
In our Twice-Told Tales report recently, we find that in the Barnesville Enterprise edition of September 21, 2006, we profiled 1974 BHS grad, Scott Robb, who was an active member of the Shamrock Wrestling team during his high school years.
At that time, Robb held five Guinness Book of World Records for giant vegetables. A resident of Palmer, Alaska, Robb was a perennial winner in Alaska State Fair competition.
While Barnesville may have giant pumpkins, Robb, continues to grow award winning entries at his Palmer residence in the “Land of the Midnight Sun”.
According to posts on the Alaska State Fair Facebook page, Robb took top honors in the 30th Annual Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off that that took place on September 5.
Robb’s 122.7-pound cabbage was shy of his 2012 World Record of 138.25 pounds! Robb’s nearest competitor entered a 98.2-pound cabbage to claim second place.
The Fair takes place annually in Palmer, Robb’s adopted hometown, over a three week period in August and September. Palmer, a town slightly larger than Barnesville, is located 42 miles north of Anchorage.
A quick internet search provides details of Robb’s other champion vegetable entries. He won the state competition 2023-2025 in addition to this year’s competition.
In addition to cabbage, “he has previously held world records for other colossal vegetables, including a 105-pound, 14.5-ounce giant kale in 2007, a giant turnip, and a record-breaking cantaloupe.”
Additional information on the Alaska State Fair may be found on the event’s Facebook page.
