Free Safety Day Activities Planned

Several area agencies will team up to educate on safety at the Barnesville Fire Department this month.

The Barnesville Fire Department’s free annual safety day will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 9, at the station.

Agencies, including the Barnesville Fire & EMS Department, Barnesville Police Department, Belmont County Sheriff’s Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol and HealthNet Aeromedical Services, will attend the safety day to provide information and education.

Each hour will feature special guest speakers and live demonstrations offering safety tips and expert insights. The sheriff’s department will showcase a K-9 demonstration, and Fire Chief Tim Hall will perform a live grease fire demonstration. Visitors can also explore fire trucks and ambulances. Law enforcement officers will discuss school bus safety and stranger danger, while the fire department will cover fire safety practices and the importance of fire drills.

Love Like Afton Organization will also attend the event to educate visitors on carbon monoxide poisoning while boating. The organization was created in memory of Afton Taylor, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning during a boating accident on June 30, 2019.

The fire department is taking donations to donate life vests to the organization. If anyone wants to donate, they can do so to the fire or police department.

Food will also be available, including Shamrock Tropical Sno and Martha’s Food Truck. The Junior Women’s Club will attend and have popcorn, coffee and a candy machine.

“The whole goal is community involvement,” said Hall. “It’s about participation from the community between us and it and safety tips from a law enforcement standpoint and from a fire and EMS standpoint.”
