Early this month Captina staff and volunteers attended a Land Trust Alliance Rally in Cleveland where they connected with some of the 948 land trusts who help protect more than 61 million acres across the country. Topics covered at the event included good governance, stewardship, community connection, and more.

Volunteers recently tackled trail maintenance at Rock River Refuge which is located off SR 379 south of Temperanceville in Somerset Township where they beat back encroaching weeds along the trail and cleared a bench.

Meanwhile, at Raven Rocks, located between New Castle and Beallsville in Wayne Township, a volunteer work crew repaired a bridge and worked on stairs at the First Ravine.

Both sites are free and open to the public during daylight hours.

In August, participants in the Ohio University’s Rural Teacher Corps were at Dysart Woods located southeast of Belmont learning about the virgin forest and planning events for the classroom this fall. The program is managed by Dr. Jacqueline Yahn, associate professor of teacher education at Ohio University.

Yahn, who is the granddaughter of longtime Dysart caretakers Bill and Bernice Bartles, shared a history of Dysart Woods at a Captina Science Pub in April. Read the Barnesville Area News feature on her program here.

The First Sunday Hikes at Dysart Woods continue. The next hike will take place on October 5. WTOV-TV 9 featured the most recent hike of September 7 where attendees learned how trees in the old growth woods begin to prepare for the winter months this time of the year. Watch the video here.

Members are also preparing for the organization’s 4th Captina Creekin’ Festival that will take place October 25 along the South Forth of the Captina Creek near New Castle. Hours for the event are Noon-3 p.m.
