Local Quilt History Comes to the Watt Center

The Watt Center for History and the Arts is hosting a program about Eastern Ohio Quilts of the 1800s.
Barnesville native and Barnesville High School alumna Terry Tickhill Terrell will present the quilt program at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Watt Center, 511 Watt Avenue. Doors open at 5 p.m. to allow attendees to view the displays of local history.
This is part of the Watt Center’s informational series, Watt secretary Mary Sidwell said.
Terrell presented a program earlier this year on the Wheeling Stifel Calico Works, and Sidwell said she is happy to welcome Terrell back for another well attended program.
The Watt Center appreciates a $5 donation to support the center and its mission.
The money helps the Watt Center put on programs and pay for operational expenses, such as heat and electricity.
Terrell is planning to bring four to six quilts (some large and some small), at least two quilt hangers, books, large pictures and other items to view.
Visitors will learn about quilts and the history of quilt making in Eastern Ohio.
“We know people in this part of our region are interested in quilt making,” Sidwell said, “and Terry is full of information.”
Ohio quilters are, and have always been a highly productive lot. The range of 19th century Ohio quilt styles was broad, and definite variations of styles were popular in eastern Ohio.
Settlement patterns, ethnic differences, transportation networks, and the role of historical events were tied to the popularity of quilt patterns over time.
Terrell will also share information on the Ohio Quilt Research Project.
The Watt Center for History and the Arts provides a museum to preserve and display artifacts illustrating the rich historical record of business, industry and agriculture of Barnesville and the surrounding area. Art displays and classes are offered to encourage appreciation and creativity. More information is posted on the group’s Facebook page.
