Contestants to Bring the Heat in Annual Chili Cook-off

Contestants will face off in the third annual Copper Cup Chili Cook-off that will benefit the Barnesville State Theater project.

The Copper Cup Chili Cook-off will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Oct. 25 in the West Main Street parking lot, adjacent to the Blue Moon Tavern. The rain date is set for Oct. 26.

Attendees will be able to purchase drinks at the Blue Moon Biergarten. The alcohol will be secured and monitored by people stationed at each gate. No alcohol may leave the cook-off premises.

Contestants are still able to register; however, no more than 16 entries will be accepted. Contestants may bring their own canopies. Cooking may begin at 8 a.m. with samples ready for judging by 11:30 a.m.

Sponsorships are also available. Sponsors receive VIP tickets which provide early tasting privileges, signage and an event banner. A designated VIP/Sponsor area, featuring complimentary, themed cocktails, premium bourbon and scotch tasting, as well as hors d’oeuvres, is another privilege. Sponsorship levels are: Extra Hot Sponsor, $2,500:  25 VIP tickets Hot Sponsor, $1,000: 10 VIP tickets Spicy Sponsor, $500.

Those interested in registering for the cook-off or in becoming a sponsor may contact Blue Moon Tavern owner, Susan Lapham, at 281-224- 3030 or at susan@avenues.net.

With a $10 per person ticket purchase, the public may taste the chilis beginning at noon. Children under ten may taste for free. Judging for the “People’s Choice Award” will begin at noon and end at 3:00 p.m.

In addition to the chili contest, a DJ will be playing music throughout the cook-off, and a scarecrow competition will take place.

All judging will conclude at 3 p.m., with the winners announced at 3:15 p.m. For the chili cook-off, first, second and third places will win cash prizes and boasting honors! First place receives $250 and a personalized, engraved copper cup, second place is awarded $150 and third place takes home $100.

Winner of the scarecrow contest, based on public voting, will receive $100.

Lapham said when she envisioned the chili cook-off three years ago, she wanted to benefit an organization in Barnesville. The Barnesville State Theater group needed money, and she was happy to help.

“I believe the theater will be the cultural hub of Barnesville and even Belmont County,” Lapham said. “We need a venue for the arts, such as movies, live performances, banquets, classic films, etc. which, in turn, will drive business and bring people to Barnesville.”
