This poster is prominently displayed at Bless Your Heart Folk Art, 157 East Main Street, Barnesville. It was discovered upstairs in the rooms of the former Odd Fellows Lodge (I.O.O.F) next door a number of years ago.

While it is doubtful there was a Rock and Roll program at the lodge, it’s likely the “Showcase of Stars” of the Rock and Roll era did take place somewhere in the Barnesville area and at other locations in the Upper Ohio Valley. We do know that WHLL Radio in Wheeling was at 1600 on the AM dial.

In those days, local DJs did indeed spin the records selecting the songs they and their listeners favored.

Unfortunately, a web search for Jim O. Smith, JimBill Productions as well as DJ Jim O. Smith, the band Ricky Henry and the Rhythm Rockers or musician Big Bill Thalman, produced no results.

For more information on those days when local radio stations were at the top of the heap, former WKWK disc jockey Bob Dorris penned a blog on the topic in 2007. Read it here.
