Baseball: Rox Beat Zeps 6-1 at Home on Senior Night

After going 0-2 in their last two games, Coach D.J. Butler and his Barnesville Shamrocks (17-6 overall) needed to pick up a victory, especially with Monday, May 11, being Senior Night in a game against the Shenandoah Zeps (6-15 overall).

This was a contest that could’ve ended in disaster for the Shamrocks had their offense continued to be stagnant; however, that wasn’t the case.

The seniors who were present and celebrated on the evening were outfielder Jack Anderson, left-handed pitcher Dylan Blon, first baseman Keegan Martin and utility player Max Miller.

Starting the evening on the mound was none other than Blon, who recorded a single strikeout through two complete innings of play before being replaced by junior right-handed pitcher Parker Sobutka in the third.

The contest saw very little action from either team’s offense through the first four complete innings of play. The only thing worth noting was a base hit by the Zeps’ Cayden Rucker in the second, a second-base hit for Blon in the same inning and two more base hits for the Zeps in the top of the fourth.

Then the fifth inning happened. Although Sobutka had a superb game on the mound by recording five strikeouts, Shenandoah’s lineup started to come alive.

Peyton Forshey recorded a hit, and not too long after, his teammate also had a base hit which became an RBI single, allowing Forshey to score.

Thanks to Sobutka’s consistent pitching and Barnesville’s defense, the home team was able to fend off the visiting Zeps from taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw the Shamrocks take the lead in spectacular fashion with a near home run by Miller that included three RBI’s.

Complementing Miller was junior outfielder Brayden Watters with a second-base hit that allowed for an RBI single, and Blon followed that up with another RBI single to tally five runs.

Shenandoah tried to get some momentum in the top of the sixth, but saw no success. Barnesville’s final score came in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Gunner Dudzik which allowed Martin to score.

The seventh inning only saw the Zeps record one base hit, but the Shamrocks were able to fend off the visitors to secure the 6-1 win at Barnesville Memorial Park.

Next up, Barnesville will be hosting the Meadowbrook Colts this Wednesday, May 13, with the first pitch expected to be thrown at 5 p.m.

Shenandoah will continue playing on the road with a game tomorrow night against the Brooke Bruins of Wellsburg, WV, beginning at 5:15 p.m.
