Gardeners Prepare to Swap Plants
The annual Belmont County Master Gardener Plant Swap will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Belmont County Fairgrounds Wise Building, 45420 Roscoe Road, St. Clairsville.
Gardeners should bring plants by 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Gardeners may bring plants, seeds or bulbs to swap and are asked to label each item with the plant name, planting instructions, bloom color, bloom season and other helpful information. Master gardeners also encourage attendees to bring extra shovels, gardening tools, aprons, ceramic pots, unopened soil or garden decorations for a freebie table.
The event will also feature raffles for gift baskets donated by the community.
A check-in table will categorize plants into groups including houseplants, vegetables, trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. A team of volunteers will also be available to help identify plants for those unsure of what they have.
Participants will receive a number upon check-in, and groups will be called up for the swap throughout the evening. Attendees may select the same number of plants as they bring.
Ohio State University Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Dan Lima described the event as a fun community gathering and a way for gardeners to receive free plants while connecting with others who share the hobby.
“We want to keep the joy of gardening alive in the community without spending too much, because it can get expensive buying plants every year,” Lima said.

“This is for the master gardeners to interface with the community, do some education and bring the communities together to have like-minded people that enjoy gardening, enjoy plants together and just keep that energy going,” Lima said.
