Press Release

NELSONVILLE, Ohio – The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO), in partnership with the Longaberger Family Foundation, has awarded 17 grants, totaling $47,028, to support K-12 civics education programming throughout the region.

“Firsthand experiences are critical for civics education at a young age – and consistent, dedicated funding is what makes sustained programming possible,” said Matt Kaido, Longaberger Family Foundation representative. “We’re proud to continue to work with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio to direct resources to where they will have the greatest impact for students across the region.”

FAO’s Strengthening Civics Education in Appalachian Ohio initiative provides funding for projects and programs that advance civics education opportunities for K-12 public school students. Its goal is to equip the children of Appalachia with the knowledge and tools necessary to become community leaders. “Strong civic health requires opportunities for young people to participate in their communities, understand how government works and see themselves as community builders and leaders,” said Cara Dingus Brook, FAO president and CEO. “Thanks to the Longaberger Family Foundation and its continued partnership, we’re able to provide students hands-on learning experiences that empower them to strengthen civic health across our region for years to come.”

Since 2019, FAO and the Longaberger Family Foundation have awarded more than $182,000 in civics education grants through the Strengthening Civics Education in Appalachian Ohio initiative. This initiative is part of FAO’s Education Pillar of Prosperity, one of five areas essential to growing and sustaining a flourishing Appalachian Ohio.
