Tree Trouble at Barnesville Elementary
Many in the community are noticing trees being cut down at the Barnesville Elementary building. Last week three locust trees located at the central office entrance on the corner of Broadway and Church Streets were removed as the root systems were affecting the drainage system.
“With the added water coming from the new parking lot at the First Christian Church, the runoff from rain prevents access to the entrance doors at the central office,” Superintendent Micah Fuchs said. The school intends to replace the drainage system. There are no current plans to replace the trees at the entrance.
Tuesday, at the entrance to the Elementary Gymnasium, the huge Magnolia tree was removed. Building and Grounds Director John Blattler shared that when they went to trim the tree, they found that the trunk was split. “I really hated to cut this tree down,” Blattler said. “For safety reasons it had to come down.” After it was removed, the stump displayed signs of rot.
This past year the Barnesville Area Education Foundation awarded Elementary Principal Zack Powell a grant of $ 28,263.00 to replace the current electronic sign at that location. When the new sign installation is complete, the landscaping will be spruced up.
