Barnesville Veterinary Services Welcomes Dr. Shadow
Barnesville Veterinary Services recently welcomed a new vet, Dr. Shadow, who specializes in equine and large animals.
Dr. Shadow Montag grew up in Belmont and is a Union Local graduate. He continued his education at Columbus State College before going to The Ohio State University where he received a degree in animal science.
Dr. Shadow completed veterinary school at Ohio State. Additionally, he studied abroad in South Africa in a program focused on wildlife medicine.
He has a deep love of working with horses and other large animals specializing in their care. However, he also appreciates working with smaller pets in the clinic and to provide basic care for exotic pets, such as reptiles.
Growing up with horses, Shadow always had a passion for riding. At the age of 18, he moved to Tennessee to be a trick rider for one of Dolly Parton’s shows. He eventually worked his way up to lead rider for several of the show’s tricks.
After a few years of performing, he decided to return to Ohio and pursue a veterinary degree. Now, after an absence of 12 years, he returns to Belmont County.
Dr. Shadow’s goal for the future is to foster a collaborative community among local large animal vets to maximize the good they can do for the animals and create a more sustainable future for large animal veterinary work.
Many rural communities lack the access they need for large animal care and this is specifically an issue Dr. Shadow hopes to address. He anticipates expanding emergency coverage to neighboring counties to help communities that lack access to the services they need.
Montag may be reached at the clinic located at 207 N. Chestnut Street by calling 740-425-2218.
