4th Annual Copper Cup Chili Cook Off

For four years, Susan and Wayne Lapham, owners of the Blue Moon Tavern and Biergarten, have hosted a special Barnesville fall event to benefit the return of the historic Barnesville State Theater.

The 2026 event is set for Saturday, October 10 (rain date, October 11) in the West Main Street Parking Lot. For Buckeye fans, fear not, the event is always set for The Ohio State University football ‘bye” week!

Contestants will vie for the chili crown spending the morning cooking their own special chili recipe that will be put to the test from 11:30 am. – Noon when judging and VIP Tasting takes place.

From Noon to 3, for a $10 admission fee/donation (children under 10, free) to the theater cause, the general public can sample all of the contestants’ chilis and help select the “people’s choice” and “best presentation” awardees’ recipe!

At 3:15, the winners will be announced with the the top three contestants collecting cash awards of $250, $200 and $150 respectfully.

Adding color to the cook off and area will be a variety of scarecrow creations that will be up for a $100 cash award for the best scarecrow.

In 2025, organizer Susan Lapham was able to present a check for $25,000 to Barnesville State Theater president Roger Johnson. (Photo provided)
