October 28: Carrigan Goodson and Kelli Haney, health educators for the Belmont County Health Department provided an important and informative program on administering Narcan / Naloxone to people experiencing an opioid overdose.
Goodson and Haney have provided the training and distribute free kits that contain two doses of the life-saving drug to hotels, restaurants, bars, schools, churches and organizations throughout Belmont County. The drugs are provided thanks to the DAWN initiative of the Ohio Department of Health. DAWN stands for “Deaths Avoided with Narcan”.
Goodson shared that so far this year there have been 120 reported cases of opioid drug overdoses in Belmont County. This figure does not fully represent all overdoses as some go unreported. Nor are all overdose cases fatal.
