Saturday the weather was perfect for the WesBanco Shamrock Relays. The local sports community also took that time to honor one of their own, Mark Brown, longtime BHS track coach.

Brown is the longest-tenured coach at Barnesville High School. He retired as head girls track coach this year but continues to serve as cross country coach for both boys and girls teams.

Mark has been a fixture in track programs at Barnesville for over 40 years. Mark started his coaching career in 1982 as an assistant to Conrad Heydle. Over the years he has served as both head coach and assistant coach while spending many years at the Junior High level.

In 2014 he took over as head girls track coach again until retiring this year. Under his leadership the Shamrocks achieved significant success most notably as back-to-back Girls OVAC 3A Champs in 2023 and 2024. In addition, Coach Brown has had many District Championship teams and several state qualifiers over the years.

Brown was presented with a plaque as a token of the appreciation to his dedication to track over the past 40 years. His commitment to coaching track has gained him the respect of the Barnesville community and more broadly, the Ohio Valley athletic scene.

The Shamrock Boys claimed the title while the Girls came in second.

We will share full team results of the Relays once they are released.
