Editors from the magazine visited villages and cities throughout the summer evaluating finalists in six categories—community spirit, education, entertainment, health and safety, business environment and culture and heritage.

Gardening Couple Brings One-of-a-Kind Ornamental Grassland Garden to Ohio Valley

A gardening couple began work on growing grasses in an Ornamental Grassland Garden that will be the only one of its kind in the United States on the farm at Old World Garden.

The Grassland Gardens is a garden all based upon ornamental grasses. The project takes three years to complete due to the plants needing years to bloom. Phase one took place this year, and owners Jim and Mary Competti have added a couple thousand plants so far, including a variety of 24 ornamental grasses.
