Pumpkin Festival Build Up

The festival highlighted several contests for the upcoming festival this week including the Scarecrow Contest, Tobacco Spitting Contest, Professional Building and Grounds Decorating Contest, Cornhole Contest and the Fiddle, Banjo & Mandolin Contest.  

Displays – Decorated Pumpkin Produce: one contestant will win the Billy Crawford Trophy for Best of Show sponsored by the Home Towner Café of Quaker City.

Pumpkin Festival Horticultural Entries Sought

Pam Morlan, chair of the Horticultural Exhibits at the upcoming Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, encourages area residents to enter home grown items from A to Z. Entries will be accepted on West Main Street Thursday, September 25 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.   

Ribbons will be given to 1st – 3rd place winners in the following categories. Best of Class will be given for outstanding entries in selected categories.

AGRICULTURAL & FIELD CROPS (all varieties of corn, grains, grasses, misc.), may be displayed in jar or min of 2 ears

BUCKEYES a) Decorated b) non decorated

FLOWERS a) cut arrangement b) potted plant c) miniature garden d) misc

FRUITS (apples, berries, cherries, grapes, melons, peaches, pears, plums, rhubarb, pawpaw, misc.) may be displayed on plate, jar, basket, etc. will be judged as overall display of each variety

GOURDS a) Largest by weight b) ornamental – any variety c) misc

HOME CANNED GOODS overall display will be judged as well as the following individual varieties: jam/jelly/preserves, fruits, pickles, salsa, vegetables, misc.

NUTS all varieties of nuts will be judged on overall appearance and should be displayed in groups of at least 10-12 where possible. Nut varieties acorns, butternuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, hickory nuts, walnuts and pignuts, and misc.

ODDITIES & UNUSUAL FEATURES a) oddities may include anything that doesn’t fit into a listed class b) unusual features will include an item listed in any class that has grown with atypical features (i.e., two carrots forming into one)

OVERACHIEVERS any fruit or vegetable that has grown unusually large for their species

PUMPKINS & SQUASH a) largest Jack-O-Lantern type, by weight b) largest cushaw type variety, by weight c) largest zucchini, by weight d) misc. any other variety

SUNFLOWERS a) largest head, by diameter b) tallest c) misc.

VEGETABLES & GARDEN CROPS may be displayed on plate, jar, basket, etc. will be judged as overall best-looking crop a) beans b) beets c) cabbage d) carrots e) cucumbers f) potatoes g) tomatoes – slicer h) tomatoes – bite size i) peppers – bell or sweet j) peppers – hot k) misc.
