Storybook Park Brings Fun and Reading Literacy to Barnesville Memorial Park

Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library staff is busy preparing for its Storybook Park event, which features interactive stories and crafts for families. Taking place every other year, the free, family fun day began in 2003. Preregistration is not required.

Storybook Park hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Barnesville Memorial Park. It will be moved to Barnesville Middle School in case of inclement weather.

When visitors arrive, they receive a bag and program explaining the event. The park will be blocked off from traffic that day allowing children to freely enjoy the day.

“We have stories come to life,” said library director Brandi Little.

Children will listen to stories set up around the park and participate in crafts and activities. A balloon artist, carnival games and sing along event will also be featured.

Staff at the library choose books based on illustration vibrancy and storytelling. The Belmont Correctional Institute made the backdrops for the books that are chosen.

The library will have a stand where children receive a free book, made possible by the Women’s Club of Barnesville.

The goal of Storybook Park is to share with children the importance of reading as well as to give back to the community, Little said.

“It’s just getting the books in little ones’ hands and getting them excited about reading,” she said.
