Two Hired at Special School Board Meeting
The Barnesville School Board met in special session at 7 a.m., July 24, in the administrative office for a short meeting to handle personnel and other matters.
At the meeting the board approved
- Hiring Erin Hannahs as half-time preschool teacher for the coming school year
- Rachel Leek was selected as a substitute employee for secretary, aide and cook
- Issuing a purchase order in the amount of $78,565 for Hylant Administrative Services/Ohio School Plan property/liability/auto/violence insurance coverage effective August 15 for a period of one year
In other matters, teacher Corey Powell, Key Club advisor for the past 10 years, approached the board about increasing the stipend for the position for the coming year.
Powell’s comments followed those by Kiwanis Club trustee Bruce Yarnall, at the July 15 meeting. Yarnall praised Powell’s efforts over the past decade, increasing membership from 22 to 183, the 5th largest Key Club in the entire state.
Powell said keeping track of volunteer hours for school district graduation requirements is very time consuming. So much so, that during the most recent school year, he paid an aide money out of his pocket to help manage the group.
“I have someone doing something daily,” Powell said as he shared he would resign if the stipend was not increased.
Board member Dennis Huntsman shared they have yet to talk about the matter.
“A better time to address this is during contract negotiations”, Board member Ed Eberhart said, noting that if they changed it, other advisors would expect the same.
“Perhaps this is the wrong time to do the right thing,” Kiwanis officer Brock Rogers said supporting Powell.
“Corey has built one of the largest Key Clubs, and our club had been one of the smallest in our district,” Rogers said. “It would be a shame to lose him”.
The BOE voted to go into executive session for “B. employment” following the discussion but took no action upon returning to the public meeting.
The next regular meeting of the school board is set for 5:30 p.m., August 21, at the middle school cafetorium.
