Cutting Class for a Cure Set for Friday

The 17th annual Cutting Class for a Cure will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday at Barnesville Middle School on Shamrock Drive to raise funds for Belmont County cancer patients.

Director Denise Adkins-Leach described the event as one with a carnival atmosphere. Students and members of the community will gather in the gym in the morning. A survivor walk will follow at 8:30 a.m. The remainder of the day will feature food tents, games, a band, prizes and other activities.

In addition to Friday’s activities, the group’s popular chair auction wrapped up last week, featuring chairs painted by middle school art students, to raise additional funds for local cancer patients.

Friday’s event operates on a ticket system, meaning students and members of the community purchase tickets to take part in the day’s activities. Prizes are awarded at the end of the day after 2 p.m.

All funds raised during the event will go toward helping local cancer patients. Cancer patients may request help from the committee. To receive assistance from the program, the patient must reside in Belmont County.

In addition to the money raised during the Cutting Class for a Cure event, staff members of the school work throughout the year to support local cancer patients. They raise funds through a Valentine’s Day dance at the middle school, school competitions and donations.

Leach noted that many people feel good about donating because the money stays within the county.

She added it’s important for students to participate in events like this because it teaches them the value of giving back to the community, of helping others. She said the students respond well and do an excellent job participating.

“If they’ve learned how to give back, then I feel like my job here is successful, because what I want them to take from this is to help others,” Leach said.
