BES Library’s Annual Book Swap: Because the Best Books are Shared!
Barnesville Elementary School’s Librarian, Mary Diegmiller, organizes a Book Swap where the students bring gently used books to the library to swap for “new” books. Parents and teachers donate books, so every child receives one during the swap. This year’s swap occurred in March.
Diegmiller engages the entire student body for this event. Before the event, grades 2-4 create posters to display throughout the school to generate excitement. First grade and kindergarten students make bookmarks. Diegmiller shares several stories that will be available during the swap.

This year’s theme was Camp Out With a Good Book. Students transformed the library through decorations, similar to a Book Fair. Diegmiller stated, “I organize the books by fiction/nonfiction, chapter books, easy readers, and picture books sections for easy access and searching.”
Traditional book fairs include posters, pencils, sticker books, and trinkets to distract students from the books. Also, not all students bring money to participate. At the Book Swap, no money is required, and every student leaves with a new read. “Students create their own posters and bookmarks using their own imagination rather than shopping to ‘purchase’ these items,” said Diegmiller.
“We encourage and promote reading. Every child leaves with a book and a smile!” exclaimed Diegmiller.
