Area Memorial Day Services

Area communities will remember the ultimate sacrifice of America’s men and women in the armed services for the past 250 years in the coming week through parades and services

Barnesville

The annual Barnesville program will take place at Veterans Plaza, corner of E. Main and N. Arch Streets with local veteran Roger Johnson delivering the address. The complete program and information on Johnson’s service to our county may be found here.

Batesville

Monday, May 25: The Batesville American Legion Memorial Day Parade will take place at 10:00 followed by a service at the cemetery.  The parade route is from the old school on Pike Street, travel past the Legion and end up at the cemetery. Andy Duch will be the featured speaker.

The Batesville Legion Auxiliary will be set up at the basketball court at 9:00 am with the most delicious homemade baked goods.

Beallsville

Saturday, May 30: A traditional Memorial Day Services will take place Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m.. The event will take place at the Legion home at 52651 Broad Street. The band, Just Plain Grass, will perform at 12:30 p.m.    

Belmont

Monday, May 25: The Parade lines up at the former school property on Brown Street, 8:30 a.m. The parade moves at 9:00. A service will take place at Belmont Cemetery, 9:30 a.m. with Belmont County Commissioner J.P. Dutton as speaker.  

Bethesda

Monday, May 25: Continuing a longstanding tradition, veterans and citizens of the Bethesda will mark Memorial Day with a parade and program.     

The parade line-up location is the corner of Maple Avenue and Virginia Street. Line-up registration begins at 10:15 a.m. with parade moving at 11 a.m.  

The parade route is Maple Avenue then turn south on Main Street and end at the Bethesda Post Office.   

The memorial program under the auspicious of Bethesda American Legion Post #90 will take place at the military plaza at the municipal building Bethesda American Legion Post #90. Local resident Ashley Carpenter will deliver the address. 

Jimmy Blaney will serve in the honored role of parade marshal.

Over a dozen entries are anticipated including the Bethesda Police, Belmont County Sheriff, Legion Color Guards, Legion Auxiliary, veterans float, Union Local band, cheerleaders and sports teams, Union Local Rotary and others.

The parade theme is “250 America Anniversary in red, white and blue,” according to village administrator Dirk Davis.

All entries including floats, bicycles, RTVs, and anything dressed in theme colors, are encouraged.

 Organizers will award prizes of $50 Riesbeck gift cards to 20 entries picked randomly by the judges displaying the 250 Anniversary themes.

In addition to the parade, the Bethesda Fire Department will sell Chicken BBQ dinners at the fire station beginning at 11 a.m.

Flushing

Members of the Flushing American Legion Post #366 and and community guests will gather “uptown” for services at Noon followed by a program at Rock Hill Cemetery, Belmont Ridge Road (CR 72), Flushing at 1 p.m. for Memorial Day Services. Program details are shared below.

Quaker City

Monday, May 25:  The Color Guard will step off from the Quaker City Firehouse at 10:00 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at Friends Cemetery at approximately 10:30 a.m. Pastor Jeff Eschbaugh will be the featured speaker. After the program, refreshments will be provided at the Quaker City Pavilion.

Monday, May 25: The St. Clairsville area community will gather on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 at 7:30 a.m. at the courthouse plaza “for a special ceremony alongside the riders of Run For The Wall as we come together to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country”, the event profile notes.

This year’s ceremony will feature special remarks from Barnesville resident retired Major General Gregory W. Batts, a highly decorated veteran whose nearly four decades of military service included leadership roles both stateside and overseas.

The program will include a traditional 12-gun firing salute by American Legion Post #159 and patriotic music performed by the St. Clairsville High School Band.

Attendees should arrive early and park behind the Courthouse, as portions of Main Street will be temporarily closed during the ceremony.
