Ohio FFA Convention: Barnesville Members Honored
The Barnesville FFA Chapter attended the 98th Ohio FFA Convention at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. At the two-day event, several of Barnesville’s students were recognized.
Reece Bostic, Natalie Burkhart, Bo Detling, Ronnie Duvall, Emma Mazgaj and Mason Starr received their Ohio FFA State Degrees. Less than 3% of all vocational agricultural students earn this award.
The requirements for an Ohio FFA State Degree include:
- Active Membership: Must be a current member and have been in FFA for at least two years.
- Education: Completed at least two years (360 hours or more) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education.
- SAE Project: Demonstrated outstanding growth in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) by investing at least $2,500 or a combination of 300 hours and $1,500+.
- Leadership/Activity: Participated in at least eight FFA activities above the chapter level and at least two Career Development Events.
- Community Service: Completed at least 25 hours of community service.
- Scholarship: Maintained a satisfactory scholastic record.

Every year, Ohio selects the best of the best for each SAE category to be recognized for their hard work and dedication.
Emma Welch was named the Ohio FFA Proficiency 3rd Place finalist in the Ag Processing Category. Welch’s SAE project was her goat milk soap business. Welch made soap, lotion and Chapstick from milk that she collected from her breeding goat project. Welch expanded her business to offer beef tallow balm, shampoo bars and more.
Candidates for this recognition must submit extensive financial records, journals, and numerous essays about their project for evaluation at the district and state levels.
Started in 2011, the Ohio Ag Net Student FFA Reporter program allows FFA members to assist in the media coverage of the convention for Ohio’s Country Journal and Ohio Ag Net. Selected student reporters gain hands-on experience with interviewing, video and news coverage.
Barnesville Senior, Lydia Fuchs, was chosen for this year’s student reporter team. Fuchs was also an FFA in the USA News Reporter this past year. The Barnesville Area News reposted Fuch’s stories.

Lydia Fuchs was an Ohio FFA Foundation Earl F. “Doc” Kantner Scholarship recipient. Only six seniors in the entire state received this scholarship each year. The scholarship award was $1,950.20.
Dr. Earl F. “Doc” Kantner contributed 45 years of leadership to Agricultural Education and Ohio FFA. Dr. Kantner served as a teacher, State FFA Executive Secretary and Ohio FFA Foundation and Center Director. An endowment was established to award a scholarship to Ohio FFA members in honor of Dr. Kantner.
