Depot Roof Project Launch
After days and days of rain, “Mother Nature” presented a brilliantly bright and clear sky Thursday morning to bless the launch of the historic Barnesville Depot roof project.
The project involves “lifting and relaying” the 110-year-old tile that was manufactured in New Lexington, Ohio, by Ludowici Roof Tile Company, a company that is still in business.
This method of roof repairs/replacement is the industry standard on historic buildings. The depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Any broken historic tile will be replaced by salvaged tile the contractor secured from a demolished former Catholic school in Washington State.
Thursday morning Jared Rhodes, project subcontractor and owner of Red Clay Roofing of Lyman, S.C., said thus far it does not appear as many salvaged tile as anticipated will be needed for the job.
The long-delayed project, approved by the Barnesville council in April, came in at $131,991 through a competitiave bidding process. The project received a state capital grant of $75,000 thanks to the efforts of Ohio Senator Brian Chavez and a $5,000 GAP grant from the Belmont County Tourism Council.
