Baseball: Shamrocks Move Past Jets in District Semifinals

BARNESVILLE — The Barnesville Shamrocks pulled away with a clutch 4-1 win over the Union Local Jets in the District Semifinals of the 2026 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Baseball State Championships at Barnesville Memorial Park Tuesday night.

Although the score was close, this game was in total control of the Shamrocks.

Starting on the mound for Barnesville was senior Dylan Blon, and he pitched for the entire game. Doing so, he recorded three strikeouts for the evening.

In the bottom of the first, the Shamrocks got on the board with a sacrifice fly ball by junior Blake Burkhart that allowed senior utility player Max Miller to score from third base.

Outfielder Jack Anderson tallied an RBI double that allowed sophomore Gunner Dudzik to score, making it 2-0 in favor of the Rox in the second.

The best opportunity for the Jets to tie or take the lead came in the third inning. With the bases loaded and Union Local scoring its first run of the contest, Blon and the Barnesville defense were able to hold off the Jets.

In the bottom of the third, the Shamrocks scored the remaining two of their total four runs in the game. Parker Sobutka hit an RBI double which brought Burkhart into home plate.

Lastly, Dudzik hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Blon to score, making it 4-1 in favor of Barnesville.

With the help of solid fielding and good pitching from Blon, the Shamrocks were able to prevent the Jets from tying or taking the lead.

Storm clouds were threatening Tuesday night at Barnesville Memorial Park. Union Local threatened too, but the Shamrocks gained the victory and move on to the District Finals. ©Barnesville Area News Company Photo

Next up, Barnesville will compete against the Martins Ferry Purple Riders tonight, May 28, at Buckeye Trail High School’s baseball field in Old Washington with the first pitch thrown at 5 p.m.

During the regular season, the Shamrocks played the Purple Riders three times, going 2-1 at home and away. The single loss resulted in the Purple Riders coming away 9-1.
